Are Swimming Pools Safe From COVID-19?
After one hundred plus days of social distancing, summer is here, and we are all ready to take the plunge.
So… how safe are swimming pools?
According to the Center for Disease Control, there is no evidence that SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, can spread to people through water. That said, the most significant consideration when visiting pools and beaches is social distancing. Maintaining a safe distance can be especially challenging for children, so parents need to proceed with caution.
Here are must do’s:
maintain 6 feet of distance between people outside your household - in and out of the water
make sure your child wears a mask when not in the water - bring 2 face coverings per person in case one gets wet
wash hands with soap and water upon arrival and when leaving the pool
have plenty of hand sanitizer available and use frequently
If social distancing proves impossible, then, unfortunately, a trip to the pool will have to wait until the pandemic subsides. In the meantime, if there is outdoor space at your home, water-play with a kiddie pool and a hose can provide hours of fun for young children.
Stay safe and be well.
